Energy in the world

Energy is the primary ‘fuel’ for social and economic development, but energy and energy-related activities also have significant impacts on other areas such as the environment and technology impacts. Therefore, it is important for decision-makers to have access to reliable and accurate data in a user-friendly format. The energy sector has long lead times, and therefore any long-term strategy should be based on sound information and data. Detailed resource data, selected cost data and a technology overview in the main WER report provide an excellent foundation for assessing different energy options based on factual information supplied by the WEC members from all over the world. Some of the changes we have seen over the last couple of years are: The past 15 years have seen unprecedented change in the consumption of energy resources Unexpected high growth in the renewables market. Growth of unconventional resources Improvements in technology evolution for all the resources De

Types of energy

Some entries in the above list constitute or comprise others in the list. The list is not necessarily complete. Whenever physical scientists discover that a certain phenomenon appears to violate the  law of energy conservation , new forms are typically added that account for the discrepancy. Heat, work, and transfer of matter are special cases in that they are not properties of systems, but are instead properties of  processes  that transfer energy. In general we cannot measure how much heat or work are present in an object, but rather only how much energy is transferred among objects in certain ways during the occurrence of a given process. These energy transfers are measured as positive or negative depending on which side of the transfer we view them from. Classical mechanics  distinguishes between  kinetic energy , which is determined by an object's  movement through space, and  potential energy , which is a function of the position of an object within a  field , which may
